WAGS weeks
Much as we wish it was different, here at ride-tribe we know that a lot of mountain bikers are blokes. And we also know that a lot of you have a wife or girlfriend (if you're wondering where WAG comes from!) who may not be as into biking as you are. So what happens when you want to rip up the trails for a week, but don’t want to waste your precious holiday time without your loved one? A ride-tribe WAGS Week of course!
The WAGS weeks are a pretty straightforward concept that came about after speaking to a bunch of guys here a couple of years ago. They were from a small cycling club in the South East, and were out in the Alpujarra for their annual biking trip. They all loved the area, wanted to share it with their WAGs, but knew they'd be bored senseless hanging round the casa waiting for them to finish their ride.
Then it dawned on us. They can’t be the only bunch of people in that boat. We know dozens of people in that situation. So we figured we’d try to bring you all together.
It should be emphasised that although we call these WAGS trips, it's very much tongue in cheek and you don’t have to be a WAG to come along. The trips are open to any couples, groups of mates, or whatever combination, regardless of who’s biking and who’s not. Similarly, any singles wanting to hop on to either group are more than welcome to join us.
We run four types of WAGS weeks throughout the season, on the dates given below. Should you have a group of at least 4 riders we can book a week exclusively for you.
Action WAGS
For Action WAGS we take the emphasis off biking, and instead offer various action activities throughout the week. These include rock climbing, gorge walking and trekking.
Trekking WAGS
Trekking WAGS spend the week enjoying the fantastic walking paths in the Alpujarra. In winter we keep below the snowline, walking between different villages and valleys in the area. Later in the year, after the snows clears, we go right up to the roof of Spain, el Mulhacen, to take on some serious mountain walking.
High Mountain 4th - 11th October 2008, 30th May to 6th June 2009
Low Mountain 24th - 31st January 2009
Biking WAGS
Here we simply split into 2 riding groups for the week. The boys ride in one group, the girls in another. The girls group tends to be a lot more fun, as we ride less demanding trails, take more coffee breaks and generally have an easy going, laid back time. We complement the riding with some sessions on mechanics and bike skills, and even have a yoga session to stretch out during the week.
Cultural WAGS
Finally we come to cultural WAGS. This is for folks who realise all this action is a bit unnecessary, and prefer their holidays to be, well, holidays. For these trips we focus more on learning about the Alpujarra, through a combination of easy walking and sightseeing. It includes visiting workshops of local ceramic and textile artisans, tapas tours and other local highlights. We also include a visit to Granada, where we spend the day at the Alhambra Palace and the evening touring the bars and restaurants of the Albayzin. Needless to say with scent of tapas and rioja in their nostrils the biking group ride in to join us.
Accommodation
All our WAGS weeks work on the principal that we split into two groups during the day, and then join up in the evening over tapas, drinks and dinner. This allows you to share your holiday with your other half and talk over the adventures of the day. To give you a bit more privacy we stay in a small local hotel, in double or twin en-suite rooms. If you're travelling as group and already know each other we can easily accommodate you in a village house if you prefer.
Catering
As with all centre based holidays breakfast and lunch are provided each day. Evening meals are taken out in the village, with tables prebooked at your preference during busy periods.
